History Of The Band

Where did the name 'Rammstein' come from o_O

'Rammstein' is the name of an East German Air Field, where three Italian air force jets collided on August 28. 1988 at an air show at the US airbase in Ramstein, Germany. Roughly, 40 spectators died and several hundred were injured, the death total rose to 69 in the next two months.

The name 'Ramstein' was all over the media at the time, and just got stuck in their heads. 'Rammstein' isn't a German word, but it literally means "Ram-stone". The band changed it from Ramstein (with one M) to Rammstein (with two). They chose it in memory of the disaster and because they thought the meaning seemed to fit their music. Their first song self-titled 'Rammstein' was about this tragedy.

The Story

Rammstein was started by Richard Z. Kruspe-Bernstein(guitarist). Back home, at Schwerin where Till Lindemann(singer) worked as a basket weaver and played drums in the band First Arsch. At this time Richard lived with Oliver Reidel(bassist) and Christoph Doom Schneider(drummer). Richard soon found it hard to write music and lyrics at the same time, thats where Till came in. There was a contest for new bands announced at this time, and the prize was studio time. So, the four of them decided they would try it out, they recorded the first Rammstein demo, and won (im not sure what the song is). Paul Landers(guitarist) knew them all at this time, and gave the song a listening to, and decided he wanted to join the band. Christian aka Flake(keyboardist) wasn't sure about joining at first as he didn't want to be in a band for a very long time, but eventually... he joined.
